Erb’s Palsy
Shoulder dystocia is a delivery complication; it actually means a birth complicated by the shoulder. A baby may be difficult to deliver vaginally due to the size of the baby’s shoulder girdle: the shoulders may become lodged in the birth canal. Obstetricians can sometimes predict and prevent shoulder dystocia, or, when shoulder dystocia occurs at delivery, Obstetricians have techniques and maneuvers to safely deliver the child.
When shoulder dystocia is present and too much pressure is applied to the baby, a nerve injury can occur, called a Brachial plexus injury. The long term result of such an injury is Erb’s Palsy or Klumpke’s palsy.
In Erb’s Palsy, the child sustains a partial or complete paralysis in the shoulder and arm. In Klumpke’s Palsy, the child has reduced range of motion in the wrist and hand.
