Misdiagnosis

Over the past 100 years, the healthcare industry has developed treatment options for virtually every condition. Some treatments are incredibly effective: antibiotic medications curing bacterial infections; the re-opening of heart arteries with angioplasty; treatment of high blood pressure or high cholesterol with medications; and prevention of colon cancer by removal of polyps. Other treatments are not as effective, but give the patient a chance of surviving the illness: surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatment for different cancers; dialysis for people with kidney failure; medication and insulin for people suffering from diabetes. These treatments mean nothing if the patient does not first receive a correct diagnosis of illness.

A missed diagnosis can be especially devastating when immediate treatment is necessary. Patients with cancer, especially breast cancer, can be more effectively treated the earlier the diagnosis is made. Patients with infections may develop sepsis and organ failure if treatment is not started. Patients suffering a heart attack or stroke can have their blocked arteries reopened if they receive proper treatment within a few hours. When a diagnosis is missed or delayed, these patients may suffer avoidable injuries or even death.
